Public Safety

Together with Education, there is no more important function of government than protecting the lives and property of its citizens. Mayor Koch understands this, and it’s why he committed unprecedented resources to our Police and Fire Departments. It’s also why he’s earned the endorsement of our firefighters in every election.

  • Crime rates at near-historic lows in almost every major category

  • Increase in patrol officers, the return of the K-9, and the doubling of manpower in the Police Department’s Drug Unit

  • Increase in manpower for the Quincy Fire Department means every engine and ladder is fully staffed at all times

  • Important Fire Department Rescue One truck in service full-time for the first time

  • First-of-its-kind safety program that received national attention for our firefighters, providing industrial washing machines and a second set of turnout gear to help reduce occupational cancer rates

  • Major equipment upgrades for the Fire Department, including the City’s first tiller truck able to make sharp corners and tight streets.

  • Reformed ambulance contract, leading to response times that are among the fastest anywhere in the state
